Obituary

In an early 1960's summer a young woman reluctantly stepped onto the streets of Washington, D.C. after traveling from Alum Bank, Pennsylvania. Red lipstick afresh, white gloves pulled taut, Nancy Carol Oldham adjusted her cat-eyed glasses, ready now to make her mark on the world. It was there in D.C., as she worked as a copyeditor and typist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, that she met a young man on a motorcycle and the two went off to write their own adventure.

Nancy Carol (Oldham) Proctor, born 1941, passed away Sunday morning, sun rising as she woke up in the arms of her loving Lord. She is preceded in death by the handsome boy on the motorcycle, Irving Edsel Proctor Sr.

She is survived by her three sisters Connie Weaver, Bonnie Mount, and Debbie Border as well as her children, Irving Edsel Proctor Jr. (Sonny), Kellie Harlan and husband Mike, Brett Proctor and wife Jill, Chris Proctor and wife Barbara, and step daughter Debbie Ashworth.

Her grandchildren are Lauren Burzynski and husband Josh, Bethany Calhoon and husband Nick, Kaylan Thompson and husband David, Tyler Proctor, Nick Proctor and wife Arin, Krystan Baumgartner and husband Nate, and Karlie Svebakken and husband Seth.

Great-grand children are Jon, Hank, and Sawyer Burzynski; Brooks, Ellis, Atticus, and Collins Calhoon; Lane Proctor; and Millie and Avett Thompson.

Her children loved her fierce protection, her ability to somehow never not be there when you needed her most, and, honestly, her heavenly rice. Her grandchildren loved how she'd follow a scolding with a box of oatmeal cream pies, how her door was always, always open, how she'd let you play with her hair for hours, and how she'd just come to visit with donuts and coffee. Her great grandchildren loved the stories she read, the naps she swaddled them into, and how she was love, peace, and safety personified.

However many called her Mom or Meme, countless more loved to call her Miss Nancy. They loved how she remembered more than their names. She knew and remembered nearly everything they shared with her - their stories, their families, and every little detail that made them unique, special. In word, she made you feel seen.

She never forgot a birthday, milestone, memory, or street name. When she recommended you read something, it was an invitation to experience something that, in some way, changed her life. If you liked her carrot cake, expect it every time you came over. And if something you said or did made her smile or laugh, you knew you didn't need anything else for the rest of the day.

Decades ago a young girl sat down at a new job in a new city and her heart must have nervously fluttered at the thought of writing her own adventure. Anyone who loved her (and to know her was to love her) would say, undoubtedly, her adventure is still being written, as every single person she touched is still trying to love and become just like her.
