Doug possessed a deep Christian faith. He served in many capacities in the churches he attended throughout his life, always singing in the church choir. Then, as an adult, he was inducted into the Order of the Arrow and was awarded the Silver Beaver by the council for exceptional service. Doug loved watching his children play soccer and acted as a referee for games from recreational league to college level. As a devoted alumni of the University of Michigan, he proudly wore their colors and cheered on their teams, especially football.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, June (Buttrick) Vander Molen of Murray; a son, Derek Vander Molen of Clarksville, TN; a daughter, Bethany Hughes of Russellville, KY; three brothers, Wayne Vander Molen of Byron Center, Michigan, Roger (Jan) Vander Molen of Saranac, Michigan and Calvin (Julie) Vander Molen of Statesville, North Carolina; four nieces, six nephews and many great nieces and great nephews.
