DeeAnn Umar, 85, of Murray, Kentucky went home to be with Jesus on February 1st, 2024.
DeeAnn, affectionately known by many as DD, was born on September 20th, 1938 in Vienna, IL.
She was an only child of the late Opal Zander (Milligan) and Harold W. Milligan. She is preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, Dr. Farouk Umar. DeeAnn is survived by her daughters, Mae Alexander (Gary Hopper) of Kuttawa, Leila Bacon (husband Bryan) of Mayfield; her grandchildren Maegan Procasky (husband Seth) of Orlando, FL, Dr. Hillary Suhaila Whipple (husband Stayce) of Nashville, TN, Marshall Bacon (wife McLain) of Destin, FL, Morgan Alexander, Avery Bacon, Catherine Alexander, Ella Bacon, and many dear friends, former students, and fellow MSU Racers.
DD graduated from Vienna High School in 1956. She began college at Southern Illinois University where she met Farouk, both graduating and getting married in 1960 in Carbondale. They welcomed their first daughter Mae in January of 1964, and later completed their family with their second daughter Leila in 1967. In 1970, they found their forever home in Murray, KY where they lived out the rest of their lives together.
DD was a beloved educator, teaching business, typing and short-hand in Illinois for many years. After relocating to Murray, she was a substitute teacher at Calloway County High School, remembered and loved for decades by her students. She joined the office of School Relations at Murray State and was there until she retired in August of 2003.
She spent her spare time and retirement as a full-time grandmother to her seven beautiful grandchildren and was a learned chef of authentic, traditional Arabic food. She had a deep love for music, bargain shopping and all things blue. She will be remembered for her frosted blonde hair, signature red fingernails and lipstick, and unconditional friendly and loving regard for all she crossed paths with.
